How Much Water Per Bag of Concrete?
An 80-lb bag of concrete mix takes about 3 quarts (roughly 0.75 gallon) of water; a 60-lb bag about 2.5 quarts; a 40-lb bag about 2 quarts. But the precise amount matters far less than the principle behind it — and getting that principle wrong is the single most common way DIY concrete ends up weak and cracked.
The water-to-cement ratio is the strength dial
The water-to-cement ratio — the weight of water divided by the weight of cement — governs concrete strength more than any other single factor. Lower ratios (around 0.40–0.45) produce stronger, more durable, more watertight concrete. Higher ratios (0.50–0.60) are easier to pour and finish but noticeably weaker. There's an inverse law at work: as you add water, strength falls, and it falls faster than you'd expect.

Why "just add a bit more water" backfires
The temptation is real: a stiff mix is hard to work, and a splash of water makes it flow. But that water doesn't disappear — it leaves microscopic voids as it bleeds and evaporates, and those voids are weakness. Over-watered concrete also shrinks more as it cures, which means more cracking. The flow you gained costs you strength you can't get back.
Mixing by feel
Aim for a consistency like thick oatmeal: it should hold its shape on a trowel and not slump into a puddle. Add water gradually — you can always add a splash, but you can't remove it once it's in.
